For the very first time in history, the International Cycling History Conference (ICHC) comes to Asia, with Indonesia proudly serving as host. The 35th ICHC in Klaten, Central Java, marks a milestone: the awakening of cycling history in this part of the world.
Framed by the timeless beauty of Prambanan Temple and the majestic Mount Merapi, this conference is more than an academic gathering, it is a celebration of identity. Indonesia, with its living cycling traditions, vibrant communities, and deeply rooted cultural spirit, offers Asia its rightful place on the global stage of cycling history.
Papers and presentations exploring diverse aspects of cycling history, both global and local, will enrich the dialogue. Yet above all, ICHC 2026 signals something greater: the recognition that Asia, with its unique and diverse social and cultural narratives, has its own cycling stories to be shared alongside the Western canon.
The 35th ICHC in Indonesia is a landmark, the first step toward the awakening of cycling history in Asia, connecting the past, inspiring the present, and guiding us toward a more just, sustainable, and human-centered future of mobility.
